When looking for the best monitor size for gaming, it can be easy to get confused with which exact size you need. With all the buzzwords and features manufacturers put into their marketing, it's important to remember that a monitor's performance doesn't depend on the size, but the size is a personal preference. With so many choices and so many models, it isn't easy to decide which size is best for you. The resolution, viewing distance, and even the games you play can all impact your decision. As you likely won't be using the monitor only for gaming, it's important to consider how else you plan on using the monitor when looking to buy one.
We've bought and tested more than 260 monitors, and below are our recommendations for the best screen size for gaming. See our recommendations for the best gaming monitors, the best 1440p gaming monitors, and the best 4k gaming monitors.
While the gaming monitor market tends to focus on standard desktop monitors with larger sizes, there's a niche of portable monitors. These are designed for gaming on the go and are also good if you game on a laptop or want something as a secondary display to keep messages or any other vital info open. You don't get the same picture quality as larger desktop gaming monitors as they tend to have lower resolutions, but with smaller screens, the pixel density is also higher. While the market isn't big either, there are some with fast refresh rates and good motion handling for a fun and responsive gaming experience.
That's the case with the ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE, which is a 17-inch portable display. It's a surprisingly great gaming monitor that even outperforms some desktop monitors, with a fast 240Hz refresh rate, an incredibly fast response time, and outstanding low input lag. It's feature-packed, with FreeSync and G-SYNC Compatibility, ensuring a tear-free gaming experience. It also has a built-in battery, so you don't need to always draw power from a source. If you find that the 240Hz refresh rate is too high for your needs, there's a similar 16-inch display with a 144Hz refresh rate, the ASUS ROG Strix XG16AHPE, which performs similarly.
If you don't want a portable monitor, then the smallest size you can get is either in 24 or 25 inches. Getting a monitor in this size is ideal if you don't have a ton of desk space, and they offer enough screen space for gaming, and it's easier to see everything in your field of vision, like maps, during competitive gaming. These monitors are great for fast-paced FPS games but not as good for more immersive ones like adventure or atmospheric games. Gaming monitors in this size tend to have lower 1080p resolutions while increasing the refresh rate to 240Hz or even 360Hz, as it's easier for a graphics card to hit a high frame rate with a low resolution.
The Dell Alienware AW2521H is a great 25-inch gaming monitor. It has a fast 360Hz refresh rate and incredibly smooth motion handling, with no noticeable ghosting or overshoot behind fast-moving objects. It natively supports G-SYNC variable refresh rate (VRR) technology, ensuring a nearly tear-free gaming experience even when your computer can't quite keep up, and it can take full advantage of your NVIDIA graphics card. Unfortunately, its VRR support doesn't work with AMD graphics cards, so if you have an AMD graphics card, consider the Dell Alienware AW2523HF.
Many people will say that a 27-inch option is the best monitor size for gaming, and that's because there are many different 27-inch gaming monitors available. You can find anything from basic 1080p screens to high 4k resolutions, although the most common resolution is 1440p, and you can also find them with refresh rates even up to 240Hz. 27-inch monitors are good if you want more screen space than with a 24 or 25-inch display and find that 32-inch screens are too big. If you don't mind something slightly larger, there are also some 4k gaming monitors in a 28-inch size.
The LG 27GP950-B is an excellent 27-inch gaming monitor with a 4k resolution and a max refresh rate of 160Hz. It has an amazing response time and low input lag, ensuring a smooth and responsive gaming experience. It supports both FreeSync and G-SYNC variable refresh rates, which helps reduce tearing in games. Both of its HDMI ports support HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, making it a great choice for Xbox Series X or PS5 gamers, as you can play 4k games up to 120 fps without issue. If you want that the 4k resolution is too demanding on your graphics card, you can also consider a 1440p, 240Hz monitor like the Gigabyte M27Q X if that's what you prefer.
If you want something even larger, 32 inches is the best gaming monitor size for your needs, as it offers more space while maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio. It's growing in popularity, and there are plenty of options to choose from, with a wide range of features. At this size, you can find models mainly with 1440p and 4k resolutions, and like with 27-inch monitors, 1440p models are available with high refresh rates and fast response times, making them a great choice for fast-paced gaming. 32-inch, 4k monitors are more common for console gaming as most of them coming out now have HDMI 2.1 bandwidth.
The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 S32BG85 is an incredible 4k gaming monitor that's much better than other 32-inch gaming monitors. It's a fantastic monitor for gaming thanks to its incredibly fast 240Hz refresh rate, and if you aren't going to take full advantage of the max refresh rate, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 S32BG75 is a similar monitor with a 165Hz refresh rate instead. The Neo G8 has a fast response time, resulting in very clear motion. Both the Neo G8 and Neo G7 are some of the few monitors on the market that use Mini LED backlighting, resulting in deep blacks and bright highlights if you often play HDR games.
Moving up in size categories, ultrawide monitors are great for gaming, as the wider format makes it easier to see more of your surroundings at once, delivering a more immersive experience. They're best suited for immersive first-person games like RPGs and atmospheric games, but keep in mind that not all games support the 21:9 aspect ratio. Most ultrawide monitors have a 34-inch screen size with a 3440x1440 resolution, but there are some 38-inch models available, which are generally intended for office use, but there are some 38-inch gaming monitors available. 34-inch monitors offer the same screen height as a 27-inch screen, but there's more horizontal screen space.
The Dell Alienware AW3423DW is one of the best gaming monitors we've tested and is available in a 34-inch screen size. It's an amazing gaming monitor with a new QD-OLED panel that delivers a near-instantaneous response time, resulting in crystal-clear motion with no noticeable blur behind fast-moving objects. It also has outstanding low input lag and native G-SYNC variable refresh rate support for a nearly tear-free gaming experience. Its OLED panel delivers an incredible dark room experience, with nearly infinite contrast and perfect uniformity, with no distracting blooming around bright objects, and its picture quality is even better than the Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 S32BG85.
If you find typical 24 to 32-inch monitors too small, look for larger displays. Although you can easily game on a 55-inch TV, you might find that too big for a desk, so monitor manufacturers are starting to release more large-screen monitors in the 40 to 50-inch range. There are LED options with a 43-inch screen like the Gigabyte AORUS FV43U, and there are slightly larger OLEDs at 48 inches. The advantage these sizes bring is that they maintain the typical 16:9 aspect ratio, which is good if you play games that don't support an ultrawide format, like on a console. There are a few downsides to this screen size as they tend to be expensive, and there aren't many models available.
While there are some TVs that are available in 42 and 48-inch sizes and are popular to use as monitors, like the LG 42 C2 OLED, there are also some dedicated monitors available in this large size, like the LG 48GQ900-B. The main difference with getting a monitor versus a TV for this use is that they have more dedicated monitor features like a DisplayPort input, and they don't have dedicated smart systems that you won't need when connected to a PC. Many of these bigger monitors have OLED screens that result in perfect black levels with a near-instantaneous response time for a smooth gaming experience.
If you want a large size but don't want the tall screen of a 42 or 48-inch display like the LG 48GQ900-B, then look into another niche type of monitor known as super ultrawide. It's good if you have a multi-monitor setup and would rather get one monitor instead. These monitors are rare, but they have a staggering 32:9 aspect ratio and 49-inch screen size, the equivalent of placing two 27-inch monitors side-by-side. Most super ultrawide monitors have a 5120x1440 resolution, which is the same vertical resolution as a 1440p screen. Like with any large monitor, there are some trade-offs as they naturally take up a lot of space and their curved screen may not seem appealing to some.
The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is an excellent 49-inch gaming monitor that's one of the view super ultrawide displays available. It features Mini LED backlighting and has a good local dimming feature, making it a great choice for dark room gaming. It has a fast 240Hz refresh rate that you can achieve over a DisplayPort connection, and it delivers a great HDR experience thanks to its high peak brightness. While its 1000R curve may seem aggressive, it also helps bring the edges of the screen within your field of vision so that they don't look washed out.
